Chapter Nine

El Capucha left shortly after, leaving me with a thrumming of emotions I couldn’t get a handle on.

After El Capucha announced that Bernardo Curry was involved in this mess, I felt shook. Not much was known about the guy, except that he liked to start trouble and he was a pro at it. A dangerous pro. Learning that he had been mixed up with El Capucha’s family didn’t come as a great surprise to me.

Trouble often liked to run with trouble. I’d seen it a million times at the station.

It was still early in the day, and I had nothing to do and no ability to concentrate, so I decided to hit the gym.

Once again, I ran there. By the time I got to the gym, I was more ready than ever to hit a punching bag. To feel something crumple or shake under my fists. Something that wasn’t a person—that is. I was not itching for another fight, in fact I hoped to avoid a scenario like what happened at the Walker pack compound as much as possible for the rest of my life.

Good luck if you’re gonna get involved with El Capucha and Bernardo Curry, I thought and snorted out a laugh. I was thinking one way and acting another way, but I just couldn’t help myself. My need for justice overrode my need to stay safe. So much so that I was aligning myself with criminals without so much as a second thought now.

“What’s so funny, Ms. Crawford?” Josh asked. He popped up from behind the desk where he’d been placing folded towels. I jerked backward and gave a little yelp, startled.

“Way to scare the spirits of the old gods out of me!”

The young desk attendant grinned. “Would it be terrible if I admitted that that was one of the favorite parts of my day. Terrifying our customers as I jump up from behind the desk.”

I laughed and grabbed a towel off of the front desk. “Some people probably deserve it. But now me!”

He chuckled.

“Maybe you should work in a haunted house,” I said because I actually loved those. It was just when I wasn’t expecting the fright that I hated it. “Halloween is coming after all.”

He wiggled his fingers. “Maybe that's a good idea.” He dropped his hand to check me and gave me the once over. “You look a lot less stressed today, but still it seems like something is wrong. Mr. Gonzales felt it too. Is there something you want to talk about?”

Oh boy, I must really need this session with the bag if the desk attendant was noticing how stressed I was.

“No thanks, Josh. It’s just personal stuff, but you’re a sweetheart for asking.”

He nodded. “Everyone needs shoulders to lean on.” Without another word he handed me a pair of boxing gloves. “No one’s been at the bag all day; she’s waiting for you.”

“Just what I like to hear.”

I ran into the gym, ignoring all the stick women on the elliptical and the big dudes lifting heavy.
